Taxonomy
The Taxonomy View (Main Menu
/ Admin
/ Taxonomy
) shows the content of the Txture Taxonomy, a knowledge base about Technologies, Cloud Products, Datacenters and Cloud Providers.
Introduction
The Taxonomy is a cloud-based service provided by Txture. It categorizes Technologies into a tree and specifies Cloud Replacements for individual technologies. You can either manually traverse the tree by clicking on the Load more... links, or by searching for a particular technology name in the search bar. Selecting an entry will update the sidebar to show its details:
The sidebar also allows you to add a new child node to the selected Taxonomy element with the Add child item button.
Searching for Technologies & Products
Use the search field on top of the report to filter the taxonomy contents.
The tree will then show the results in the leaf nodes, and the path to the root of each leaf will be expanded. The matched part of the name is also highlighted.
Adding a new Entry
You can add new entries to the Taxonomy. Select the element to which you wish to add a child, and use the Add child item button in the sidebar. A new dialog will open, asking you for the details:
This dialog allows you to specify our new Taxonomy entry by stating its Name, Description and Website. The technology name must be unique. If you activate the Is inhouse technology? checkbox, then your entry will be treated as private, i.e. it will only be visible to your Txture server. If you leave the checkbox unchecked, then the new entry will be visible to everyone, i.e. all Txture users (across all installations of Txture).
The Txture Team maintains the Taxonomy
The Taxonomy and its data are maintained by the Txture team. In case you come across any mistakes, please let us know through our support channels.
We explicitly reserve the right to make changes to the Taxonomy without prior notice. In particular, in case that we detect a public technology (e.g. Apache Tomcat) being flagged as Is inhouse technology, we reserve the right to switch its visibility to public.
Taxonomy Use Cases
The data in the Taxonomy has several applications throughout Txture.
-
An Importer which attempts to set a Property which is tagged as
Technology
(see here for details) will ask the Taxonomy for a Technology with the given name. By doing so, we normalize your technology names, increasing your data quality. -
During Cloud Proposal Calculation, the Taxonomy is used to determine which Cloud Products can be used to replace an on-premise software.
-
Txture users can browse the Taxonomy and look for Cloud Products across all vendors.
By providing meaningful contributions to the Taxonomy, you therefore directly influence the quality of Cloud Migration Proposals you will receive.
